First introduced by Dan Seigel in his 1999 book “The Developing Mind”, the window of tolerance distils important neuroscientific learnings about human behaviour into an easily digestible metaphor. While it is often used to explain state changes and behaviour relating to trauma, it need not be specifically for this. It provides a jumping off point for discussions surrounding distress tolerance skills, dysregulation, dissociation, and self-care as examples while highlighting benefits of bottom up as well as top down interventions.
